Longtime South Bend Tribune political columnist Jack Colwell will be honored Oct. 16 with the first Making Democracy Work Award from the League of Women Voters of the South Bend Area. The award recognizes an individual who has made a significant contribution to the community through the advancement of democracy and civic engagement. Colwell writes a Sunday political column for the Tribune. He’s also an adjunct instructor of journalism at the University of Notre Dame. The award will be presented at an event from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday Oct. 16 at the Downtown South Bend Inc. office, 217 S. Michigan St. The event is free and open to the public. The gathering is a fundraiser with light refreshments, beverages including wine, music by a Fischoff quartet and a silent auction.
