Look at some of the blunder at BP Highway (Sindhuli - Khurkot section) ********************************************************************************** The valley slope at Ch: 17+200 was endangered from the day one of the track opening of the project. deep failure had been seen from the time itself. The road alignment at the section is passing though the narrow ridge as seen in picture. Both side slopes are very steep and long; one side is with the huge landslide and other side is quite stable. After this road sections, the road passes through most difficult terrain with narrow, steep and several loops. During the time of 2004-2005, the careful and proper slope treatments were required to keep intact the slope stability at section 17+200 ( Surface drains, check dams at series, and massive bio engineering - grass plantation, bush laying, tree, shrub plantation, fasciness, bolsters etc ). In my experience, the Japanese involved in road construction used to understand bio engineering either as a turf carpeting or Geo Teki. But at this location both application were not useful and workable. Finally they did nothing at this critical ridge alignment and hence the slope instability has been aggravated with the time. Now not only the road section at Ch: 17+200 is in critical stage but also pulled the valley side slope mass of Ch 18+200 (The pic where wire net and anchoring has been done now) due to toe cutting of slide at 17+200. The situation is now forced the team to change the alignment at 18+200 with huge hill cutting ( Pic: Hill protected with crib work filled with bag). Look at the slope treatment applied at Ch: 18+200; It is completely waste of money and adding extra surcharge to the existing cut slope. Instead, the slope could be properly benched to a suitable slope length, manage the catch drain on the benching and drain out to a safe location, use grass seeding + jute netting with live pegs which could be further added with the shrub seeding. I guarantee 20% of the present cost could provide the better & Effective solution to treat the slope. I appreciate some of the careful & proper techniques applied in the project but at the same time lots of silly works have been also carried out which is killing time and money at the project.
