Look at this closely and realize two things. One,skeletal growth plates ( specifically the spine) do not close until minimum 5 1/2yrs- 6yrs. In other words traditional training and thinking has us injuring our horses. Two, on the opposite end of the spectrum, this does not mean you do not work with a horse until it is 5 or 6. Teach him/her to be a horse that is trusting and well-adjusted to the human world and the life s/he will have in it. Revive the art of teaching the horse from the ground. Remember the images of the Lippazaners from the Spanish Riding School? Even very difficult maneuvers were taught in long lining from the ground. With a sound horse there will be MANY years of riding to come!
