More Info from the #Tybee Sea Turtle Project: This video is amazing and shows a wonderful event that most dont get to see! Please know that all species of sea turtles (and it appears that these are loggerheads and not in fact leatherbacks as the gentlemen in the video state), are endangered and protected. In order to handle sea turtles or anything sea turtle related, one must be trained and permitted by the Department of Natural Resources. All of our volunteers on Tybee go through extensive training with DNR and are the only ones legally allowed to handle the hatchlings or interfere with a nest or hatching event. Please know that while this is truly an incredible event to witness, it is crucial that these babies be left alone to make the trek to the ocean so they have the best chances for survival and for recovering the population. If you ever come across a mother sea turtle laying a nest, a nest hatching, or a dead sea turtle on the beach, please immediately contact the non-emergency Tybee Island Police Department who will contact the Sea Turtle Project.
