Looking for other opinions! In New York State, were having a California kind of election. Few offices to fill, but six ballot propositions. Most of them seem pretty reasonable and ought to pass. But Im going to vote against the expansion of casino gambling. Why? 1) Gambling tends to promote an upward redistribution of wealth, with the relatively poor gambling much more than the well-off, in the hopes of a big payoff. In the process, a lot of people get addicted. 2) I remember how Lotto got approved in this state in the 1970s. The earnings were to go to education, but they quickly ended up in the general fund with only minuscule amounts going to schools, and i do not see any mechanism to prevent this happening again. 3) Theres a LOT of money behind the campaign to get Prop 1 passed, and its coming from the gaming industry and its lobbyists. Each week I get a couple of beautifully printed full color glossy ads in my mailbox. When big businesses spend a lot of money on an election, it is because they see a potential windfall, not because they are suddenly overcome with a desire to serve the public interest. But Im willing to change my mind: counter-arguments are invited.
