History now tells us that psychedelia -- that tripped-out expression of free-love that hit its peak with the Woodstock Festival of 1969 -- first landed in the sepia world of post-WW2 America. The man who brought it forth was named EDEN AHBEZ and his song was titled Nature Boy. With its universal benediction -- The greatest thing youll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return -- the song became an anthem of peace in an age of destruction. AHBEZ himself was a true eccentric. He lived in a sleeping bag under the HOLLYWOOD sign, practiced yoga, vegetarianism, nudism and wore long hair and a beard in the period when most men were clean-shaven, ate red meat and smoked cigarettes. AHBEZ continued writing outsider songs throughout the 1950s and, in 1960, produced Edens Island, a beatnik/exotica album mixing poetry with tropical jazz. It has become perhaps the oddest entry in the genres storied history. AHBEZ died in 1995 at the age of 87. Not long after, Brian Chidester, a budding writer/historian, took to his story and has spent the last 17 years following its trail. Tiki Oasis is proud to host Brian Chidesters presentation of these findings in a symposium on the life and work of EDEN AHBEZ. Chidester will present a one-hour PowerPoint lecture with photos and audio from the entirety of AHBEZs life. Joining him will be the Millionaire of 90s exotica act, Combustible Edison. Through Chidesters research, more than 100 unpublished AHBEZ songs were discovered on sheet music, a handful of which the Millionaire will debut for the first time ever. In true Tiki Oasis form, this symposium is one of a kind.
