Looking to spice things up a bit? Try this recipe for Turkish style coffee! It was in the Ottoman Empire that the drinking of coffee as a hot beverage is said to have originated. And the first coffee house in Istanbul opened in the 1640s. Needless to say, coffee became a very important part of the culture - so much so, that the word Turkish word for breakfast, kahvaltı, literally means "before coffee". Turkish Coffee: -1 cup cold water -1 tablespoon finely ground coffee (powder consistency) -1/8 teaspoon ground cardamom -sugar (optional) -Ibrik (or small saucepan will work) -Demitasse cups (small coffee cups, if you want to be fancy and traditional) 1. Bring water and sugar to a boil. 2. Remove from heat and add coffee and cardamom. 3. Return to heat and bring to a boil. 4. Remove from heat when coffee foams. (Here you can spoon some of the foam into your cups) 5. Return to heat again, and allow to foam. 6. Remove from heat and pour into the cups, pouring down the side of the cup as not to disturb the foam (the foam is the secret to great Turkish coffee!). 7. Allow to cool for few minutes, as grounds settle. 8. Sip and enjoy! 9. And when you finish your cup, the pattern of the grounds at the bottom will tell your fortune!
