A response from Senator Mark Pryor regarding labeling gmo foods: September 13, 2013 Dear Ms. Hudson, Thank you for contacting me regarding genetically modified foods. I appreciate hearing from you. I understand that some consumers have concerns about genetically engineered foods. I recognize these concerns and others relating to food safety and labeling requirements. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has a voluntary certification process through the National Organic Program (NOP). If you would like to know more about the program, I encourage you to visit the USDA Web site for the NOP at ams.usda.gov/AMSv1.0/nop. This provides a system that provides consumers the tools to make informed choices for their families. Maintaining a stable and safe food supply in the United States is a high priority for me. I believe it is imperative that Congress and the Administration work together with the agricultural community to improve food safety for the good of public health, animal health, and trade opportunities. In addition, I share your concerns regarding food labeling. I believe it is important for consumers to know where their food comes from. As Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Agriculture, I will be sure to keep your views in mind as I continue to consider legislation related to this issue.
