Looting is wrong, wrong, wrong, in every way, hateful, opportunistic, hurts innocent citizens, distracts from peaceful forms of protest, there is nothing good or justified about it. That said, at 56, with age and experience, I also know rioting and setting fires is no solution...also wrong. But I would feel like a hypocrite getting on my high horse about it for one BIG reason. I was 20 years old and living in a town that treated gay people like shit when Dan White essentially got a slap on the wrist sentence for gunning down Harvey Milk and Mayor Moscone in cold blood. I was furious, HURT, and scared that someone could kill someone like me and not truly pay for it, like our lives meant nothing to society because we were those people. I did understand and sympathize with the people rioting outside the San Francisco City Hall that night. I might have been setting fire to it myself if Id been there. (People who knew me back then would probably agree :).)The behavior is wrong and counterproductive, I may judge it, but I understand some of why people snap and behave that way, and I respect their pain and anger if not their behavior...I wont regard them as stupid animals like some people seem to be doing. NOT saying the destruction is ok, just that I once felt the same impulse when overwhelmed with anger and and know where it comes from.
