Department or School Site All District bus drivers transport students on regular school routes and special trips during the school year. Drivers are expected to inspect their buses, maintain safe and orderly passenger conduct, and perform other related duties. Heavy Bus Drivers operate large transit school buses of at least 24,000 pounds gross vehicle weight with engines under or behind the driver. Transit buses typically seat 78 or more passengers. Heavy Bus Driver duties may include lifting or assisting students who have disabilities on and off the buses. Benefits NOTE: Positions in this job classification may be offered on a 10 or 11 month basis; salary and paid time off for 10 or 11 month positions will be adjusted accordingly. Positions in this job classification may be subject to additional furlough days. Insurance: Paid premiums for your choice of several medical, dental, vision, and life insurance plans. Retirement: Membership in the Public Employee Retirement System (PERS). Vacation: Two weeks of paid vacation to start. Three weeks after five years of year-round paid service. Paid holidays: 12 days. Job Duties/Responsibilities - Operates a school bus in transporting students to and from school and other locations as scheduled. - Inspects assigned bus prior to and at the end of each run for mechanical condition affecting safety of operation, for physical condition, and to assure that no students remain on the bus. - Maintains proper student behavior and safe riding practices on the bus. - Renders first-aid and operates fire extinguishers when necessary. Minimum Requirements IMPORTANT NOTE: In order to be considered for employment, it is the responsibility of candidates who pass the exam to maintain a valid Driver License and California School Bus Driver Certificate at all times. EDUCATION: Graduation from high school or evidence of equivalent educational proficiency. EXPERIENCE: One year of experience in driving a bus or truck of at least 16,000 pounds gross vehicle weight. Successful completion of an accredited course in school bus driver training can be substituted for six months of the experience. Successful completion of a LAUSD Transportation Branch course in heavy school bus driver training can be substituted for the one year of experience. SPECIAL: A valid California Driver License, Class A or B with Passenger, Air Brake, and School Bus endorsements. A California School Bus Driver Certificate with no restrictions except: - A First-Aid Test Waived restriction if in possession of a valid first-aid card. - An applicant for Heavy Bus Driver may apply with an Automatic Transmission Only restriction, but must have this restriction removed prior to completion of the probationary period. SPECIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: - Physical/motor skills required to safely drive a variety of buses within accepted school bus industry standards and defensive driving standards, including, but not limited to, repetitive head, neck, arm, and leg movement - Sufficient strength to lift or assist, support, or carry students with special needs on and off the bus - Ability to operate wheelchair lifts on buses, and maneuver and secure wheelchairs and gurneys for students with special needs - Ability to stand, walk, bend, crawl, climb, reach overhead, crouch, kneel, balance, push, grip, and pull - Load and unload such items as student luggage, lunches, and specialized equipment such as snow chains and lap restraints Desirable Qualifications The individuals we anticipate selecting to fill these positions will be persons who possess the following: - Knowledge of the California Vehicle Code, District School Bus Drivers Manual, and traffic ordinances of local governmental agencies within the District boundaries - Knowledge of the State Department of Education, Department of Motor Vehicles, and California Highway Patrol regulations pertaining to student transportation and bus operations - Knowledge of first-aid practices - Ability to drive a bus safely in heavy metropolitan traffic in accordance with the requirements of transportation schedules and traffic laws - Ability to promote and maintain student safety and proper behavior on a school bus - Ability to act quickly and appropriately in emergencies - Ability to communicate effectively with students on the bus and with their parents Employment Selection Process The selection process consists of a written exam, an interview and a performance test. The written test consists of the following areas: Opereation of Motor Vehicles, California Vehicle Code, State Requirements for Pupil Transportation, First Aid, Map Reading, Math for Bus Reports. The performance test consists of a pre-trip inspection, a drive test and a maneuvering exercise.
