Lots of discussion about uniform minutiae in Godzilla. There is no reason filmmakers have to get the uniform wrong. Here is the relevant section of the US Code that governs the wear of the uniform by actors etc: 10 U.S. Code § 772 - When wearing (the uniform of the U.S. Armed Forces) by persons not on active duty authorized ... (f) While portraying a member of the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marine Corps, an actor in a theatrical or motion-picture production may wear the uniform of that armed force if the portrayal does not tend to discredit that armed force. So why are the uniforms wrong so often in film? There are a number of potential reasons: 1) the Army wasn’t asked to help; 2) the Army wasnt the only service depicted (I’ve seen many people applying Army uniform standards to non-Army characters in Godzilla); and 3) The Army technical advisors are only on set when our people or equipment are being filmed or were otherwise requested by the production company - an actor shown in a scene filmed without us has a greater chance of misplacing a patch etc. All-in-all, we want to get everything in a film as accurate as possible, but the most important aspect for us is how the actors behave when they are wearing our uniform. Specifically, are they acting within the Law of Land Warfare, abiding by UCMJ, displaying the Army Values, and if they are not, there should be consequences (in accordance with UCMJ) for their character when he/she doesnt do what our country and Army expects from our soldiers. Here is a link to a relevant Stars and Stripes article from 2011 that gets at much of this same information. stripes/blogs/the-rumor-doctor/the-rumor-doctor-1.104348/why-can-t-hollywood-get-military-uniforms-right-1.159651
