Lots of help from Shane Amaya, making a good translation to English from what I wrote this weekend, Illustration + poem featured on the new #sobreontem minicomic. Citizen-Titan Awaken titan. It’s time. Stand and stretch those weary legs. Rise up and walk. For too long you have borne on your back a firmament of distant stars. Stars that don’t belong to you—invisible to the day, opaque to the night, always fleeting. It weighs down upon your atlas neck, weighs the spirit, weighs the mind. Punishment—the heavy yoke—imposed by ancient gods. No, don’t blame your old father, for the hurt is in the flesh of the father too. It’s a torment passed from hand to hand, from your father’s father’s father inherited. The burden you now disown was by those who came before you, also disowned. And you still dream to reach Olympus? You are titan, damned, never to be forgiven. No, titan! It is into this world that you are called. Come back from Hades. Cross the Stygian river. Pay Charon’s passage. The price? Twenty pieces stamped with the crude effigy of neglect and opportunity. Now raise your forehead, titan. Arise. Look around you! It’s not the hard-won penny that bends you to your knees and shatters your bones. It’s not the hard-fought penny that keeps your head down. It’s not the penny that keeps you from seeing those many other giants around you suffering the same fate. Your punished back, titan, says so! Your muscles, your sinews, your sweat cry and groan! It’s not from the penny that you gasp, crushed by its weight. Ask your body and it will tell you your pains: Your pains are the overflowing rivers and the flooded streets; Your pains are the demands imposed and the tax collection; Your pain is the hopeless wait for the lack of medicine; Your pains are the unjust deaths, secret and unsolved. Your pains are for all the stories erased. For the illiterate children who grow up abandoned, For the lack of transportation and paved streets, Your pains, your pains are for the life taken away from you. We are all on our knees. Crushed, father and brother. Suffocated, friend and foe. Now rise, Titan! It’s time! Rise, walk and raise a cry!
