Lots of things to do this weekend in the Lower Niagara River Region. Tomorrow is the 1st Annual Great Contraption Race starting at 8:30am in Lewiston with opening ceremonies at and the race started by musket fire courtesy of Old Fort Niagara. They are being very gracious as they are busy this weekend with their own event. Scroll down for more information. After the contraption race there is an after party and awards for those contraptions that dont sink during the race. Its at Veterans Park immediately following the race in Youngstown with lots of music, food, awards and fun - open to the public. Viewing happens along the River and some homes are actually hosting VIP viewing. Old Fort Niagaras event this weekend is the Soldiers of the Revolution, starting at 9am both Saturday and Sunday with loads of planned activities. Whilst in Youngstown, and Lewiston please go out and support local businesses. Here is a press release below: News from Old fort niagara Old Fort Niagara Recalls Eighteenth Century War and Diplomacy For Immediate Release Contact: Robert Emerson (716) 745-7611 x 228 On August 1-3 Old Fort Niagara will offer a series of special programs that recreate important events that took place between 1764 and 1783 that had a profound impact on the history of the United States and Canada. On Friday evening, August 1 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. First Nation leaders, elders and ctiizens from across the region will gather to commemorate, celebrate and discuss the 250th anniversary of the Treaty of Niagara. The 1764 Treaty was signed by Sir William Johnson for the British Crown and by 24 Native American Nations including the Six Nations, Wyandot of Detroit, Menominee, Algonquin, Nipissing, Ojibwas and others who were part of the Seven Nations of Canada and the Western Lakes Confederacy. An additional treaty was concluded with the Senecas of Geneseo who had participated in the Devil’s Hole fight the year previous. This treaty resulted in the transfer of a four mile strip of land along the Niagara River shore to the British Crown. The evening’s events will include two distinguished speakers; Rick Hill of the Six Nations Legacy Consortium will speak about the Covenant Chain wampum belt and the 1768 Fort Stanwix Treaty and Alan Corbiere will present an Anishinaabe perspective focusing on the Treaty of Niagara Wampum Belt. Wampum expert and artisan Richard Hamell will offer a display of reproduction wampum belts presented at the treaty. Delegates will sing traditional Native songs to honor ancestors and celebrate the making of peace. The evening’s festivities are sponsored by the Six Nations Legacy Consortium. On Saturday and Sunday, events will move forward over a decade in time to recreate the Fort’s role in the American Revolution. Activities each day will include battle reenactments, prisoner negotiations, concerts of fife and drum music, musket and cannon firings and living history programs focused on the American War for Independence. Families with children will be able to particpate in several hands-on programs including a recruiting demonstration and mock battle. By touring the period camps of the reenactors visitors, will learn about the American Revolution on the New York Frontier from the perspectives of British, American and Native American participants. Fort Niagara was held by the British from 1759 until 1796. It was an important venue for negotiations between British officials and Native people throughout the period. During the American Revolution, it also served as a base for British and Native raids against frontier settlements in New York and Pennsylvania. Old Fort Niagara is located in Youngstown, NY 14 miles north of Niagara Falls via the Robert Moses Parkway North. The fort opens at 9:00 am daily year round, and is open until 5:00 pm during the winter months. Admissions end at 4:30 pm. The Fort is closed December 25th and January 1st. Old Fort Niagara is a National Landmark and State Historic Site operated by the Old Fort Niagara Association (a not-for-profit organization) in cooperation with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation.
