Louisiana Sports History November 22, 2005 - Tulane football team honored - The Football Writers Association of America honored the Tulane football team with the 2005 Courage Award. The annual award, sponsored by the Orange Bowl, is given to a college football player who displays extraordinary courage in the face of adversity. It was the first time the award was presented to an entire football team. Tulane received the honor for battling through the season after being displaced by Hurricane Katrina and relocating to Louisiana Tech University. Coach Chris Scelfo’s team ended the season with a 2-9 record, having played 11 games in 11 stadiums in 11 weeks. November 22, 2009 – Saints register 10th consecutive win - Running backs Pierre Thomas and Mike Bell combined for 167 yards rushing and two touchdowns as the New Orleans Saints defeated Tampa Bay 38-7 and improved their record to 10-0, giving them the longest win streak in franchise history. Quarterback Drew Brees completed 19 of 29 passes for 187 yards and three touchdowns. The Saints’ defense forced four turnovers, with safety Chris Reis, cornerback Malcolm Jenkins and linebacker Jonathan Vilma each intercepting a pass and defensive lineman Anthony Hargrove recovering a fumble. Rookie punter Thomas Morstead would be named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week as he had a 48.8 average on four punts, with two inside the five-yard line and six of his seven kickoffs reached the end zone, three for touchbacks.
