Love Everlasting by C.P Murphy Excerpt: Mark asked Lauren, “Why don’t you drive home?” “No,” she answered. “It is raining. I would just feel better if you drove.” That feeling that she had was getting stronger by the minute and she was afraid that if she drove she might cause an accident. She just knew that she shouldn’t be driving. Mark was confused. Lauren never had a problem driving in the rain before. Why would she tonight? “Honey; it’s just rain! What is the big deal?” How could she tell him that the feeling she was having couldn’t have been about conceiving a child? They couldn’t have been because the thought of her driving in this rain was making those feeling very strong, stronger than the thought of having a child. “Please!” That was all she needed to say to him. “Alright; you stay here and I will go get the car.” He was selfish to want her to drive so he didn’t have to get wet going for the car. Mark didn’t tell her that though, he didn’t want her to think he was foolish. Within minutes he was safe in the car. He searched around for a napkin or something to wipe the raindrops on his face. Mark started the engine and turned the heat on to warm up the car. It was a little cool for a July night. Getting wet by the rain didn’t help any. After a few minutes he pulled up to the main entrance of the restaurant. Everything was going to be all right, she told herself. Then she wondered why her thoughts were telling her that. Something was going to happen tonight to change her life forever but Lauren couldn’t figure out what. “Oh maybe I am wrong. I know these feelings are because I am going to conceive a child. It has to be tonight.” she said out loud to herself. Then just like that the feelings were gone. Lauren shivered from a breeze that just went by. She remembered that she left her wrap inside and ran in to get it. As soon as she got outside again she saw Mark pulling up with the car. She ran fast out into the parking lot and got inside. Like Mark, she also looked around for something to wipe up with. As if reading her mind he handed her a napkin he found in the glove box. At last they were on their way home. The rain was coming down hard causing them to remain silent for most of the trip. It was very dark outside even though the streetlights seemed to be working. Mark was getting very nervous. Could Lauren have known how bad the roads were? Is that why she didn’t want to drive? He looked over at her and she seemed to be very calm. At that moment he didn’t know why but he knew that he needed to tell her something. “I love you.” She looked over at him and smiled. She was so beautiful and Mark was so happy being with her. She was about to respond and tell him that she loved him but screeching tires tore her gaze away from him. Mark noticed bright car lights moving right towards the passenger side of the car but there was nothing he could do. It happened too fast. He heard a crash and the sound of glass breaking just before he went unconscious. A few moments later Mark awoke and heard sirens coming towards the car. He tried to reach for Lauren but the pain in his head caused him to lie still. Outside the rain was still falling and the temperature seemed to drop. Fear set in. How could he let this happen? He didn’t even know what happened. Someone had hit their car but it wasn’t clear to him and he didn’t remember where they were hit. He thought of Lauren. It was dark. He couldn’t see her and couldn’t hear her breathe. “Lauren, Lauren,” he started. “Oh my god; Lauren please answer me. Lauren.” Frantic he began to reach out to her. Moving his arm around, he could feel broken glass and also the rain coming in the car. He found what he was searching for as he felt her hand grip his. Relief coming over him, he went unconscious again. Lauren felt nothing but pain. She was laying there in a puddle of blood. Her upper body tingled but she could not feel her legs at all. She was having hard time breathing. Outside she also heard the rain and knew that it must have been the cause of the accident. It was then that she realized what was in store for her tonight. The feelings she experienced weren’t about childbirth; they were about death. She knew that she had to be the one who sat in the passenger seat to save her beloved Mark. Fear was all she could think about. Her time was coming. Tears began to flow down her face. No, she couldn’t let this feeling get to her. She had to fight for she had so much to live for. In the distance she heard Mark calling out to her. She wanted to cry out for him. She wanted him to find her in the dark and hold her. She tried but nothing came out. Was it too late? Was she already gone? Lauren sensed Mark searching for her so she reached out her arm and touched his hand. Still unable to speak or move, all she could do was lay there and pray for help. Sirens filled the air. Help was on its way.
