Love Field Airport Expansion Dallas Love Field is experiencing major changes. It grows extensively and develops continuously. All these positive changes have come around since the end of the Wright Amendment. Put in law in 1979, it originally governed traffic at Dallas Love Field and limited most non-stop flights to destinations within Texas and neighboring states. October 13, 2014 was a happy day for Love Field airport and the city of Dallas. On that day the Wright Amendment expired and Love Field opened its gates for passengers. “This is a great day for Dallas, Southwest Airlines and Love Field,” said Dallas mayor Mike Rawlings. Love Field is home base for Southwest Airlines. The company uses 16 gates out of 20 at the new terminal and now operates non-stop flights to Baltimore, Chicago Midway, Denver, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Orlando and Washington Reagan. Routes to Atlanta, Fort Lauderdale, Nashville, New York, Phoenix, San Diego, Orange County and Tampa Bay are also added to the schedule. Southwest Airlines has expanded from 118 daily departures to 149 from Dallas Love Field. Virgin America Inc., which moved its operations from DFW to Love Field, has grown from 9 to 13 daily Love Field departures. And Delta Air Lines Inc. has replaced 50-seat regional jets with 117-seat mainline jets for its five daily departures to Atlanta. The projections are that 6.3 million passengers will board Love Field flights each year. That would be nearly 50 percent more passengers than in 2013, or about 5,600 more passengers departing on an average day. And a similar number of passengers will be arriving and getting off the airplanes. The city of Dallas projects that, by the end of 2016, the number of passengers going through the city-owned airport will jump around 50 percent from 2014 levels.
