Love is always there. In the cracks, in the sunlight, the smiles, the frowns, the air. I forget sometimes for tiny moments, being a single mom, I get very few hugs on a regular basis. Today, I had lunch at the Bakersfield Senior Center and the first person I met wouldnt shake my hand but instead she hugged me hard and tight like my grandma used to. The senior center is looking to turn a vacant lot into a garden and although I have no idea if it will happen, I was able to enjoy lunch with the seniors and share some great stories with my new friends. Afterwards, I went home and felt sorry for the earth and all the struggling families effected by so many hardships and lost jobs in our community, it didnt help finding a dead puppy in a grocery bag this morning with what looked like a childs sweater tied around its neck, it was hard to understand and realize that not only did the puppy suffer, but most likely came from a home where a child lives. I struggled making it to teach garden club today, I cried almost to the front door of the school. I planned to tell the kids I had allergies, but just before I entered, a mother exited wearing a green sweater with a giant heart on it and there it was, love, green is the color of healing too and the color of the heart chakra if you believe in that stuff. Once I arrived I almost walked past my class, until a boy yelled out Miss Amber, we thought you werent coming, I was about to start crying the other kids started to cheer and said we have been waiting all week for Garden Club! We went through our meditation and to my surprise the only grumpy kids in the class sat closest to me, we did a practice that I call wiggle out the grumpys and everyone started smiling. We talked about how being happy in the garden helps to grow happy plants that feed us happy food and then we entered the garden with smiles on. We talked about how even when someones grumpy or mean, it might be because they are actually sad inside and that we should give them a smile anyway, we discovered that our seedlings from last week are already sprouting and everyone begun to cheer. Then as an experiment, we planted 2 pots with radish seeds and named them Fiona and Shriek and we put Fiona in a castle and Shriek in a time out chair, then I had the kids tell Shriek that hated him and he was ugly and stupid, then they went to Fiona and told her she was beautiful and the Queen of the whole garden and how much we loved her. I have seen this experiment work before where a plant reacts poorly or well depending on your mood or thoughts. The kids really understood how their smiles or frowns effect each other. If it works they will see this in plant form, if not we will get a whole lot of extra radishes.
