Low Female Condom Use in Zambia – Survey A recent survey conducted by the National AIDS Council (NAC) has revealed that female condom use in Zambia is still very low. The survey which was conducted in Central, Lusaka and Copperbelt provinces was aimed at identifying factors that are impeding the use of the female condom and suggest strategies that can increase its use. According to the findings of the survey, the low condom use has been attributed to the female condom not readily available as compared to the male condom, uncomfortable to use, cumbersome and takes long to insert. Other findings were that the female condom is not readily promoted and information on it is not readily available in any form of media. Meanwhile, NAC has recommended for the establishing of female condom distribution points at the border offices where the public can freely access them and intensify female condom education and sensitization and emphasize the benefits of its utilization. NAC has also suggested that door to door campaigns be conducted and strengthen the supply chain for female condoms and improve their accessibility in none health facilities. Further, NAC has recommended for the establishing of user friendly pick up points for female condoms, as most women prefer to get condoms from clinics as opposed to shops because they feel stigmatized, use media to promote the product and aggressively promote the female condom alongside the male condom. NAC has also suggested that female and male condoms should be in one pack among other recommendations. During the survey, a total number of 77 respondents were interviewed in Central Province, 103 in Lusaka province and 75 respondents for the Copperbelt Province. Each province sampled three districts and the districts sampled captured both urban and rural dimensions. Lusaka Province sampled Chirundu, Luangwa and Lusaka, Copperbelt sampled Kitwe, Chililabombwe and Mpongwe while Central Province sampled Mumbwa, Kapiri-Mposhi and Mkushi. The teams conducted key informant interviews with implementers and service providers marketing and distributing the female condom.
