Lowestoft College Official 4-2 Suffolk One Parish (16), Gibson (30), Lee (37 & 72) It was the turn of Lowestoft to host its second fixture at Lound with a team missing several key faces up against unbeaten league leaders Suffolk One. Suffolk One were clearly confident even prior to getting off the bus with one player being overheard using phrases such as “we are top of the league,” “unbeaten” and “these lot must be rubbish” providing the hosts with an early team talk. With this ringing in their ears the home team set to work assisted by the wind blowing directly towards the oppositions goal. It was the visitors that started the brighter of the two teams with their slick passing and good movement often proving too much to handle to the ‘new look’ Lowestoft back line only to be denied by a firm foot from the makeshift goalkeeper Faulkner. As the half began to take shape it was target man Lee who was using his power to good effect and regularly releasing Young and Parish behind the visitors defence. This early link up was rewarded when Lee set Young free whose fantastic cross was met by the foot of Parish to steer into the empty net to spark delight into the disbelieving home team. This should have been met by another when some fantastic passing from Lee and Gibson again tore through the Suffolk One back line with both guilty of perhaps playing one pass too many as the ball fizzed past the post. As the Lowestoft pressure started to build on the now crumbling hosts defence it looked only a matter of time until the next goal came, and what a goal it was. Goffin’s fantastic fairy feet proved too quick for the visitors and after carelessly being bundled over 35 yards from goal skipper Gibson unleashed a thunderbolt from the resulting free kick into the top corner leaving the visitors reeling. And Lowestoft’s work was not yet done with Lee now causing problems at every opportunity and his nimble footwork and sublime chip over the onrushing keeper left the scoreline at 3-0 when this could quite easily have been many more. As expected however the visitors hit back quickly just before the break when some loose marking and good movement resulted in a simple tap in from a corner. With the teams now switching ends everyone present knew the wind factor was going to greatly assist the away team and with their pace already evident, a tight 45 minutes as bound to ensue. Unusually however it was Lowestoft who again pressed the away team from the off ably led by the workhorse midfield of Wyatt, Gibson and Goffin who were wreaking havoc regularly releasing Lee who had now managed to spurn an alarming amount of chances. As the half progressed Lowestoft’s fantastic work rate was the only thing separating the teams and with some excellent defensive work from Michael the home team only looked set to build on their dominance with Gibson now finding regular joy going forward only to hit wide on numerous occasions. Finally the home team capitalised on some poor defensive work when Lee latched onto a through ball to emphatically thump home. Again Lowestoft bombed forward from the restart and Lee and Young were only narrowly denied a fifth with the woodwork this time coming to the rescue. As the home team begun to sense victory for the first time in the game the visitors finally were allowed out of their half however some excellent defensive work from Brown, Barely and Jawed quelled any question of a second. This security at the back allowed the home team to again flow forward with purpose with Lee again proving pivotal this time setting up Parish whose delicate chip almost found its way onto the head of the diving Young at the back post. There was however time for a late sting in the tail as Suffolk One scored in the final five minutes to setup a nervy finish however the home team held on for a deserved three points and now jump to second in the league two points behind today’s opponents. A fantastic and spirited effort by the team with superb commitment shown throughout the game by all. Thanks would like to be extended to all that braved the cold to watch as well as the officials. Lowestoft travel to the ever friendly Suffolk New College after the half term break looking to maintain their unbeaten league run.
