Loyola Athletics...Pat Jacobs Loyola soccer team wins first round game in CIF State SoCal Regional playoffs Before a sizeable, partisan Cub contingent, Loyola’s CIF Southern Section Division I champion soccer team defeated the competitive Los Angeles City section runner-up Bell Eagles, 2-0, on the soccer pitch at Bob Smith Field on Monday in the first round of the eight-team CIF State SoCal Regional soccer playoffs. The Cubs (28-0-6) move on to a semifinal match with the CIF Southern Section Div. II champion Corona Panthers (22-6-2) on Thursday at 3:00 p.m. at Bob Smith Field. The Panthers traveled 250 miles to Clovis on Monday, where they defeated CIF Central Section champion Buchanan, 2-0. The first 40 minutes of the Cubs’ battle with the Eagles ended in a 0-0 stalemate, but Loyola was clearly in control. The Cubs scored their first goal on a header by Indiana-bound TIMOTHY MEHL off a long throw-in by SAM KITAJ. RYAN SAVITT, who will play at the United States Naval Academy next year, scored the Cubs’ second goal off a cross from Mehl. From there on, head coach CHRIS WALTER played his reserves to rest up his starters for the semifinal match on Thursday. The Cubs are one win away from playing for the State Southern California Regional title. The championship contest is presently scheduled to be held at Downey Warren on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. The soccer experts predicted a rematch of the Southern Section Division I championship game between the Cubs and San Clemente in the finals, but the Tritons were upset in the first round by San Diego Section Div. I champ Carlsbad, 1-1, 5-4 PK. City Section Division I champ Birmingham, which defeated CIF Southern Section Div. III champ Anaheim, 4-1 will play Carlsbad in Thursday’s other semifinal match Cubs’ Mission League champion basketball team begins quest for state Division I title tonight at home Loyola’s Mission League champion basketball team hosts Los Angeles City Section representative Palisades (who won play-in games to earn an invitation to the state tourney) tonight at Leavey Gymnasium at 7:00 p.m. The Cubs are seeded second in the CIF State SoCal Regional playoffs. A capacity crowd is expected for tonight’s contest. Tickets go on sale at Malloy Commons at 5:30 p.m.. It is recommended that you arrive early to assure seating. Cub baseball team improves to 3-1; huge road matchup against Agoura on Thursday Loyola’s baseball squad recorded its third consecutive victory of the young campaign behind a solid pitching performance by UCLA-bound senior NATHAN HADLEY, who was named the Player of the Game by MaxPreps. Hadley fanned nine Oak Park batters and allowed only four hits in six innings of work. He also helped his team’s cause at the plate, recording an RBI in the Moorpark Tournament 3-0 victory against the Eagles. Cub senior third baseman MATT OMORI was two-for-four at the plate. Dartmouth-bound first baseman went two-for-two, including a double, and senior catcher RICH O’REILLY had two runs batted in Loyola’s win. The story lines abound in anticipation of the monster matchup Thursday between the Cubs (3-1) and the Agoura Chargers (3-1). Loyola is ranked sixth in the Los Angeles Times’ latest prep baseball rankings and Agoura is ranked 17th. Loyola first-year head coach MIKE CORDERO was the head man at Agoura for the past three seasons before moving south to take over the program at Loyola, so it goes without saying that his former pupils will be fired up. Agoura can flat out hit the ball (the Chargers have scored 27 runs in their last two games against Woodland Hills El Camino Real and Sun Valley Poly and have slugged 41 hits in their last three outings), while the Cubs’ pitching staff has a sterling 1.21 earned run average. The Chargers are far and away the best team Loyola will have faced thus far this season. It will be a pivotal warm-up game for the grueling Mission League slate that gets underway next Tuesday against talented Chaminade at Mark Robinson Diamond at Loyola. Loyola volleyball rolls over Chaminade in three; plays number one team in CIF Central section Thursday before traveling to San Diego Loyola’s volleyball squad romped over outmanned Chaminade at Leavey Gymnasium on Tuesday night, defeating the Eagles 25-8, 25-11, 25-15. This year’s Cub club has some exceptional height. Middle blocker COLE PAULIN, who is headed to Stanford, is 6-9 and his net mate in the middle, RILEY MOORE, who is bound for Harvard, is 6-6. HAYDEN BOEHLE, a UCSB-commit, had several crowd pleasing kills for the Cubs, whose reserves played large portions of the second set, and all of the third set. The Cubs tune up for the Best of the West invitational, the nation’s most prestigious prep volleyball tournament, on Thursday at 6:00 at Leavey against the number one ranked team in the CIF Central Section, Clovis Buchanan. On Friday, Loyola (3-0) will compete in pool play of the Best of the West against Palos Verdes, Huntington Beach Edison and host school Poway. The first and second place teams from the eight four-team pools will compete for the tournament championship at the Epic Volleyball Club in Poway on Saturday commencing at 9:00 a.m. The 32-team tournament field includes the top six-ranked squads in Division I of the CIF Southern Section, which include defending section champion Huntington Beach, Loyola, Manhattan Beach Mira Costa, San Clemente, Corona Del Mar and St. John Bosco. Other top clubs include Arizona Chandler, Punahou (Hawaii). Iolani (Hawaii), Victor (New York) and Santa Barbara.
