Luck of the Draw: vbairshow Its always exciting to see a recreation of the Fokker Dr.I on static display, let alone in the air. But youll see that and more at the Military Aviation Museums 2014 edition of #Biplanes & #Triplanes, 4-5 October, 2014! The lead plane in this flight of three is painted in the livery of Leutnant Rudolf Klimke. Born in November, 1890, he was a German flying ace of WWI, credited with a score of 17 confirmed and two unconfirmed victories. The anchor displayed on the side of his aircraft was intended merely as a good-luck talisman. Klimke flew with Jasta 27, a fighter squadron commanded at one time by Hermann Göring. Wounded in action in September, 1918, he withdrew from flight operations for the duration of the war. He passed away in March, 1986, just short of his 96th-birthday. Although one of the most widely recognized aircraft of the First World War, the Dr.I was in service for only a brief period, from the end of 1917 to the first half of 1918. Today there are no surviving genuine examples of the Dr.I. Any you may see, including those at the MAM, are all recreations of the original Fokker tripe. Join us at the MAM as we commemorate the centenary of World War One, with demonstrations by these early #warbirds, including flights by R/C pilots from the Academy of Model Aeronautics.
