Luis Herrera, MD Dr. Herrera, thoracic surgeon, is a member of the Rod Taylor Thoracic Care Center at UF Health Cancer Center at Orlando Health. He joins the Cancer Center from The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston where he served as chief resident of thoracic surgery. Fluent in English and Spanish, Dr. Herrera graduated suma cum laude with his medical degree and magna cum laude with a bachelor’s in biology from the University of Puerto Rico. He fulfilled a general surgery residency at the University of Pittsburgh and a cardiothoracic surgery residency at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and the Texas Heart Institute in Houston, focusing on thoracic surgical oncology. Specializing in surgery for all thoracic malignancies, Dr. Herrera has particular interest and expertise in multimodality (chemotherapy/radiation/surgery) treatment for lung and esophagus cancers. In addition, he often performs minimally invasive thoracic surgery including videothoracoscopic (VATS) lobectomy and laparoscopic/thoracoscopic esophagectomy. Another minimally invasive approach he uses is the da Vinci® Surgical System for removal of small tumors in the mediastinum (chest) and esophageal surgery, as well as for pulmonary resection of lung cancers. Dr. Herrera has received several awards for his work including the Minority Scholar Award in Cancer Research from the American Association in Cancer Research, the National Institutes of Health Minority Supplement Grant from the National Cancer Institute and the United States Surgical Corporation Resident Research Grant. Also, he has been published in the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Clinical Chemistry and the Journal of Pediatric Surgery and has given presentations in several national meetings. Active in several professional organizations, Dr. Herrera has served as a member of the American Association of Cancer Research and the American College of Surgeons.
