Lumps and Bumps on the lids: Stye is an infection of one of - TopicsExpress

Lumps and Bumps on the lids: Stye is an infection of one of the very small oil glands at the base of an eyelash and is treated with warm compresses and topical ointments, sometimes also oral antibiotics such as tetracyclines (cannot be taken if you are on Counadin). Chalazion is a similar but larger lump or bump in the lid, caused by inflammation and/or infection of a meibomian gland, a larger oil gland further from the lid margin. These can be quite large and can become chronic. Treatment is by steroid injection (not often very effective), by a minor office surgery, or by medications, including tetracyclines or antibiotic or antibiotic/steroid ointments. Warm compresses and lid scrubs help open the occluded gland which has become blocked and inflamed or infected. Most of these will resolve without surgical intervention. We try to avoid treating these surgically, when possible, as they tend to recur, though maybe elsewhere on the same lid or even the other eye. Next post, we will discuss other lumps and bumps on the lids.
