** M/V Ocean State Update** At approximately 12:30 this afternoon, Seastreak’s M/V Ocean State became stranded near the eastern end of Jamaica Bay. The ferry boat was not on a regular service run at the time. Instead, it was on a private excursion through Jamaica Bay. The boat was carrying twenty-five residents, including local business owners from Rockaway, Queens, plus a few crew members. The vessel was moving at approximately 2 knots per hour when it grounded on the muddy bottom. We are relieved to report that no one was injured, and the vessel does not appear to be damaged. Since the vessel grounded on the outgoing tide, it might take a little time before the vessel floats free by itself on the next incoming tide. Rather than wait for that to happen, a nearby New York City Fire Department boat came by and took our passengers ashore. “I am told the boat encountered an uncharted shoal. We are sorry this happened and that our guests were inconvenienced. Thankfully, no one was injured. Our thanks goes out to the Fire Department of New York for transporting our passengers to shore,” said Tom Wynne, spokesman for Seastreak.
