MACHAKOS COUNTY FIRST OFF THE BLOCKS! October 31, 2013 at 2:17pm Dr Alfred Mutua has become the trailblazing governor with some already speculating on his political future on the National level. A quick glance at the steps he has taken since being sworn into office informs us on the trajectory he has positioned his County to take. Governor Mutua began by sounding a death knell to the status quo through engaging the local cartels and leaders in a matter of fact way. He bought a new broom with which he has used without fear and favor and this has left the divisive entitled leaders and inefficient staff scampering for safe haven. The Machakos Governor did not bat an eyelid when sourcing for talent and qualified labor and he turned a deaf ear to the rumor mills that were awash with retrogressive gospel propagated by the corrupt system trying to fight back. He has gone ahead to milk dry his networks gathered at the office of the Government’s spokesperson and previously as a lecturer in Dubai. Don’t get me wrong for a moment, my intention is not to glorify the good governor but to analyze his knack for standing out. As government spokesperson, Governor Mutua’s credibility was questioned every so often and at one point he was ‘baptised’ the king of doublespeak. Many a times he perpetuated falsehoods and went to lengths to cover up glaring disparities in his communication to the public. This is the image etched in the memory of Kenyans a far cry from what he is today. The Machakos County Governor has perfected the art of perception, knowing very well that first impressions matter. He has outsold himself and the County through attracting and mesmerizing potential and proven investors. Building on the goodwill he garnered in his previous office, He continues to astound both friend and foe with the speed with which he is unveiling landmark projects in His County. A media practitioner of note, he has mustered all his courage and armory to dominate both the print and electronic media leaving the other counties fighting for the crumbs left. Dr Alfred is not a genius neither is he a saint. He is just a man who has perfected the art of leadership. A true leader is one who never forgets that no matter how inspired the cause and course, an empty tummy directs energy towards filling it first and fast. He has been able to transform himself from a university lecturer, a government spokesperson and finally into a governor whose name is on every babe’s lips, through tackling poverty head-on and providing immediate tangible benefits to his people. Critical lessons learnt so far include the need to go back to the basics. Investments in big sounding options and bigger sounding corporations is not bad at all but nothing beats the basics; maize, beans, water and pasture for livestock. A Maasai herder will protect and value a wind turbine only after his cattle are fed and watered and his children are happy. He will be ready to enjoy the benefits of electricity from this turbine as a secondary need. AGREED...............MALIK.
