MAI code share deal opens ‘new chapter in relationship’ Khine Kyaw Myanmar Eleven YANGON - —Myanmar Airways International (MAI) is upbeat on opportunities to be brought about by the code-share agreement with Malaysia Airlines, which will be effective on February 15. Aye Mra Tha, marketing and public relations officer at MAI, said that the comprehensive code share agreement is expected to strengthen MAI’s partnership with Malaysia Airlines by developing air traffic, boosting demand, and improving schedules between the two countries. MAI flies regionally and is the sole International carrier from Myanmar with IOSA certification confirming that it meets international safety standards. Air KBZ, MAI’s sister airline, can facilitate customer’s onward travel from Yangon to domestic destinations in Myanmar, according to the airline. The agreement was first struck in 2006 and suspended in 2010 due to international economic sanctions against Myanmar. Signing this code share agreement has reopened a new chapter in the relationship between Malaysia Airlines and MAI. We hope that this will enhance the traffic between the two countries and beyond, said Si Thu while in Malaysia to sign the deal. Malaysia Airlines has always supported and contributed tremendously towards the continuous growth of Myanmar Airways International. Competition in the Myanmar sky is intense. Next month, the brand new Mann Yatanarpon airline will start flying to local destinations across the country. Mann Yatanarpon is the eighth domestic airline from Myanmar. It will operate new ATR 72-600 aircraft based in Mandalay which will fly to domestic destinations such as Yangon, Nyaung Oo, Heho, Techilek, Kengtung and Mytikyina. The intention to base in Mandalay is we want to facilitate for passengers who want to fly to Mandalay directly from overseas. Another intention is to provide Mandalay International Airport as an airport logistic hub, said Kyaw Myo, CEO of Mann Yatanarpon. The seven other domestic airlines already in service are: Myanma Airways, Air Mandalay, Air KBZ, GMA, Yangon Airways, Air Began and Asian Wings. The first Mann Yatanarpon flight will land at Yangon International Airport on January 31. The new ART 72-600 aircraft will fly directly from Toulouse, France where the plane is manufactured. This agreement with MAI would increase Malaysia Airlines’ access to Yangon, from the current 14 flights weekly to 19 flights weekly. In its efforts to promote this code share, Malaysia Airlines is now offering all-inclusive return fares to Yangon starting from RM 464 (Ks 137,376) for economy class travel and RM 1401 (Ks 414,915) for business class travel.
