MAIN AVENUE SOUTH AND 26TH STREET SOUTH ASSESSMENT PROJECT CONSTRUCTION UPDATE Thursday, May 22, 2014 OVERVIEW The Main Avenue South and 26th Street South Assessment Project began on Tuesday, April 22nd, 2014. This project includes the reconstruction of Main Avenue South from 20th Street South to 26th Street South, the reconstruction of the intersection of Main Avenue South and 20th Street South, the construction of 26th Street South from Main Avenue to Western Avenue, removal of existing roadway surfacing on Main Avenue, removal of asphalt, curb and gutter, driveway approaches, and sidewalk, installation of sanitary sewer main, lift station, force main, water main, storm sewer, base course, curb and gutter, concrete driveway approaches, and asphalt surfacing. Bowes Construction, Inc. is the General Contractor. CONSTRUCTION Street Closure Main Avenue South was closed on the morning of Wednesday May 7th and will remain closed through the duration of this project. The detour route is to use 22nd Avenue South. The intersection of Main Avenue South and 20th Street South will remain open until further notice. The intersection of Main Avenue South and 32nd Street South shall remain open throughout the duration of the project. Perimeter traffic control has been installed and additional traffic control will be set up in areas where construction is taking place. The beautiful, dry weather the area has been experiencing has helped speed up the construction progress. All of the surfacing has been removed from Main Avenue and the Contractor is working on preliminary rough grading Main Avenue prior to the installation of the sanitary sewer main. The Contractor has completed the necessary earthwork for preliminarily rough grading of 26th Street South. The sanitary sewer is installed up to the intersection of Main Avenue and 26th Street South. The Contractor is working on installing the sanitary sewer main in 26th Street South towards the west with approximately 600’ installed. Upon completion of the installation of the sanitary sewer main, the installation of the water main and storm sewer will follow. The Main Avenue South and 26th Street South project is crucial for the opening of the Southwest Elementary School and for the future growth of the City of Brookings. On a project of this magnitude, and with the location of the project affecting all traffic leaving or entering the City on Main Avenue South, we appreciate the public’s patience and cooperation during the construction of this project.
