MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT - VALLEY EAST SENIORS CLUB AND PARKSIDE CENTRE COME TOGETHER TO CREATE SATELLITE CENTRE IN VALLEY EAST I am so pleased to be able to announce that beginning this winter, the Parkside Centre will be hosting its programs in Valley East. An agreement between the Parkside Centre, Valley East Seniors Club and the Valleyview Community Church will enable Valley East residents and those in the surrounding area to take part in our great programs. For as long as I can remember people aged 50 and over have been asking for more programs and activities that they can take part in which will provide an opportunity to socialize and engage other people in their demographic. It was an absolute pleasure to take part in a recent meeting involving representatives from the Valley East Seniors Club, which is currently operating out of the Kin Park in Blezard Valley; the Parkside Centre; and Pastor Jason Tripp from the Valley View Community Church. It was clear that this group is dedicated to making this new satellite club work and I can assure everyone in the community that your City Councillors are totally committed to doing what we can to support this endeavour. The Club will operated out of three dedicated classrooms located at the Valley View Community Church. The cost of programs will be minimal and anyone who purchases a membership fee for the Valley East Club will have full membership privileges for the Parkside Centre in Sudbury. The official launch and open house is scheduled for a weekend in February, but classes will begin during the last week of January. We will provide more information, but the initial offering of programs for this winter are below: Gentle Hatha Yoga Gentle Hatha yoga classes will consist of breathwork, guided imagery, basic asanas (poses), relaxation and meditation. The asanas help build flexibility, endurance, balance and strength. Yoga is therapeutic for anxiety, stress and depression and greatly improves general health and well-being. Classes are an hour long in order to provide time for relaxation. Exercise mats will be provided, however, it is recommended that you please bring a regular yoga mat. While easy on the joints, it can improve your memory, coordination, balance, overall strength and is also a good cardio workout. What a great way to get a little exercise while enjoying the music, camaraderie and joy of meeting a challenge and making new friends. A wide variety of music is used - something for everyone and partners are not required. Do you use a digital camera? Are you considering getting a new digital camera? Do you only use your phone or tablet to take photos?Come and join Art and Alison for a series of hands-on workshops about digital photography. Together they have over 50 years of photographic experience and have taught photography in several venues. They will discuss features of simple, point-and-shoot cameras; super-zoom cameras; and digital SLR’s (Single Lens Reflex) cameras. Most of the topics covered will have only limited relevance to phone and tablet cameras because of the inherent limitations of such cameras but composition and lighting are always relevant. Bring your digital camera, the complete manual for your camera, (or the part that you feel is relevant) if you have one, a notebook and pen/pencil to take notes at each session. Be certain to have your camera battery fully charged and have sufficient room on your memory card to be able to take some photos during each session. There will be time to review photos (anonymously if desired) during each session to see what worked, what didn’t work and what might have worked better. Please sign up in advance. Mondays January 26 - March 9, 2015 (No class on February 16, 2015) 10:00 am Indian Rummy According to Wikipedia, Indian Rummy or Paplu is a card game in India with little variation from original rummy. It may be considered a cross between Rummy 500 and Gin rummy. It is played with 13 cards and at least two decks, and sometimes jokers (wild cards). It could be that Indian Rummy evolved from a version of Rummy in South Asia that goes by the name Celebes Rummy, also called Rhuk. Join the group at 1:00 pm on the first and third Monday of each month to take part in this great game. theparksidecentre.ca/
