MAKAR & TUSU PORAB (Festival) DOWN MEMORY LANE: Happy Makar, Lohri, Pongal, Tusu & so on to all friends. This festival is celebrated not only in India but parts of Asia like Thailand, Sri Lanka & even Cambodia, known by different names. Way back in our hometown near Jamshedpur, I fondly recall the days we were raised with the culture of Singhbhum district of (then) undivided Bihar. The first part of our day on Makar would begin with a tough walk down to the Roro river & then a quick dip in its damn cold waters; run back to house for the puli pithas, malpuas & ghuhlies (a kind of balls of ata, jaggery & banana fried in mustard oil). Many of the friends were from the poor adivasi locals christians or families from nearby Orissa with whom excitement of carrying the wooden structure of Tusu & singing lores with the aunties was high. A father of the local St Xaviers School would come all the 4 km or so on a bicycle to greet my father, another teacher of our school. Days have changed over the years but memories havent; let them live long & show us the path of love & simplicity. (More details in my book being authored, look for relevant chapters to be posted soon in my page Nothing but Love .
