MALAWI ELECTION NEWS AT GLANCE - Breaking: Former Member of Parliament and Cabinet Minister in PP government, Godfrey Kamanya committed suicide around 3am today. Reports say shot himself on the chest because of political reasons. He has left a suicide note including his will and preferred funeral arrangements. Reasons for his suicide are yet to be disclosed by the police. - Malawi Military and Police officers raided the residences of Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) presidential candidate Peter Mutharika on Wednesday in Lilongwe’s Area 10 and 43 houses amid escalating political tension over results of Tuesday. Mutharika says raid by Malawi soldiers to his home is ‘threat to democracy’ - Malawian President Joyce Banda will hold a news conference at the Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe on Thursday and will be prepared to answer questions about the tripartite elections and results that have been trickling in and publicised, an aide said. - Spokesperson of People’s Party of President Joyce Banda has accused the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) of rigging the election. Unofficial results that are being announced by Zodiak Broadcasting Services indicate DPP leader Peter Mutharika is leading. PP accuses DPP of rigging Malawi elections whilst DPP says its a ‘senseless’’ accusation. - Malawi Police in Lilongwe yesterday raided a house in Area 10 which they suspect there were “rigging” activities and arrested one person. Police say they have confiscated a “phone hacking machine” which they suspect to have been used in transmitting. - United Democratic Front (UDF) presidential candidate, Atupele Muluzi has protested the early announcing of elections results, arguing it might influence voters currently casting their ballots in centres that were suspended on Tuesday. - The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) says the presidential vote results will be made public when they have tallied 30 percent and then 70 percent but called for patience from stakeholders. MEC chairperson Justice Maxon Mbendera told reporters.
