MAM World Food Day March & Rally St. Louis at Monsanto’s World Headquarters We’re keeping the pressure on! Join us on Saturday, Oct. 12, 2013, 1:00-4:00pm, as we continue to expose Monsanto’s predatory corporate farming and business practices. Historically, Monsanto has brought us DDT, PCB’s, Agent Orange and Dioxin. Monsanto’s reckless use of chemicals calls into question their testing standards, lack of scientific rigor, disregard for the precautionary principle and disregard for human life and the ecosystem. Currently we’re faced with Monsanto’s seed patenting and subsequent extortion in demanding pay for seeds from future crops, the proliferation of genetically modified foods (GMOs), use of dangerous pesticides, and their efforts to control the food supply. Monsanto leaves damaged farms, people, animals and entire ecosystems in their wake. The revolving door between Monsanto employees and government positions and regulatory authorities has led to key Monsanto figures at the FDA, EPA, and Supreme Court, not to mention the Departments of Commerce, Defense, and State, the White House and Social Security Administration. Monsanto’s effort to promote GMO food is now reaching even further than blocking attempts by states, like California, from passing labeling laws. Currently a former Monsanto lobbyist is one of the corporate representatives drafting the newest and largest international trade agreement, the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP). Non labeling of GMO foods is being written into the TPP. In countries like Mexico, Africa, and Brazil, Monsanto is pushing small farmers off their native lands. Traditional farming practices are being replaced with industrial agriculture which promotes mono-cropping. In Mexico strains of indigenous corn sowed for centuries have been intentionally cross-pollinated with Monsanto’s GMO corn. Mexico went from a country virtually producing all of its own corn to a country that now imports at least half of this food staple. Mexican farmers are now paying higher prices for Monsanto’s GMO corn. In India, in 2009 alone, 17,638 farmers committed suicide after using Monsanto’s bt cotton seed. Farmers were told this seed would produce insect resistant crops. However, the resistant quality faded, pests adapted and farmers had no choice but to use Monsanto’s Roundup. As crops continued to fail their value continued to fall. The expensive use of pesticides and bt seeds has pushed farmers into bankruptcy. As a result farmers are falling into a hopeless cycle of indebtedness and despair. Many of those committing suicide are doing so by by drinking Roundup.
