MANILA, Philippines - A senior administration lawmaker filed yesterday a resolution expressing the House of Representatives appreciation to the late American actor Paul Walker for his efforts tohelp victims of Super Typhoon Yolanda that devastated several provinces in the Visayas. Negros Occidental Rep. Alfredo Benitez, who led his Visayan colleagues in the chamber’s relief effortsfor the calamity-hit areas, filed House Resolution No. 577 expressing the chamber’s “heartfelt gratitude” to Walker, who was instrumental in a humanitarian campaign that inspired other prominent US personalities to send aid to the country. Supporting the resolution were Reps. Winston Castelo (Quezon City), Emil Ong (Northern Samar), and Sherwin Tugna (CIBAC party-list). Benitez also cited “other private individuals” who also led efforts to help raise aid for the victims, including Walker’s co-star in the “Fast and Furious” movie series Vin Diesel; Filipino-American coach Eric Spoelstra of the Miami Heat, Los Angeles Lakers stars Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol, and the Portland Trailblazers. “Paul Walker, a famous Hollywood actor, was one of those individuals who went out of his way toorganize a charity event to specifically gather toys and collect cash donations for the children affected by typhoon Yolanda,” he said. “Paul Walker was in the midst of his efforts for the typhoon Yolanda victims when he died last Dec. 1, 2013 in a terrible accident involving a car crash,” he said. The lawmaker cited Walker’s “kindness and generosity” to Filipinos as among the “many exemplary and inspiring stories of private individuals all over the world” that the Philippines must acknowledge. He said Walker had also quickly organized and dispatched, through his foundation Reach Out Worldwide (ROW), a group of 12 disaster responders to areas hit by Yolanda.
