MARCH 27, 1957: Elizabeth Taylor, 25, and new husband, 47 year old producer Mike Todd at the 29th Annual Academy Award Ceremony in Los Angeles...where Mikes colossal film, Around the World in 80 Days won the Oscar for Best Picture of the year. Concurrently, Elizabeths film, Giant was also up for Best Picture of the year but, since she had been snubbed of a Best Actress nomination, she aligned herself with Todds film. She, wearing a new 25,000 dollar diamond tiara that Todd had bought for her, presented the award for Best Costume Design. When gossip columnist, Hedda Hopper, asked Todd what the significance of the tiara was, he answered her, Doesnt every girl have one? After their February 2nd Acapulco, Mexico wedding, the Todd’s spent the next seven weeks trying to adjust to life as newlyweds before embarking on a world tour. In the midst of their Mexico City honeymoon, Elizabeth was rushed to New York Citys Harkness Medical Pavilion after a spinal flare up aggravated her recent six hour spinal fusion surgery. Then it was on to Palm Springs, California where Todd had rented Marion Daviess mansion for two months. For the first time in years, Elizabeth was experiencing complete and utter joy at being Mrs. Michael Todd. As she had done with ex-husband Michael Wilding in 1952, she immediately announced her plans to retire. But, unlike Wilding, Todd was able to offer her a lavish lifestyle. More happiness abounded on March 20, 1957 as Elizabeth announced that she was expecting a baby the following October. After winning the award, he (with Elizabeth beaming with pride at his side) told the press, “I dont know about all this. I won the two biggest prizes a man can get. This (Oscar) and marrying Elizabeth. I hope that I can live through all of this....being this lucky. Sadly, in almost a year to the day ...he would be dead.
