MARKS BEST MOVIE SONGS EVER (1955-99) COUNTDOWN ... NO. 103 THE LOOK OF LOVE–SERGIO MENDES & BRASIL 66 (#4, 1968, Casino Royale) One of two versions of the theme song to Casino Royale, it was Dusty Springfield who did the original version for the movie. But another version, this one by Sergio Mendes and his instrumental group Brasil 66, became the bigger version in the early summer of 1968, hitting No. 4 with singer Janis Hansen on vocals. The Look Of Love was written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. Bacharach admitted that the melody of the song was inspired by watching the movies star, Ursula Andress, move about in the movie. The movie was originally supposed to be a part of the Ian Fleming James Bond group of movies, but Charles Feldman, who earned the rights to make the movie in 1960, could not come together with Bond movie producers Albert Broccoli and Harry Saltzman and Eon Productions on a deal, so Feldman was left with the rights to a movie but no movie to make. So in 1967, he decided to go ahead with the project outside of Eon and made a spoof of the 007 series starring the legendary David Niven as James Bond 007 20 years after he had retired from the legendary MI6. He is called upon to do one more case in Bond style ... even if he was older. It spoofed the entire Bond genre of the time. The movie also starred Orson Welles, Peter Sellers, Jacqueline Bisset, Deborah Kerr and Woody Allen, playing Bonds nephew, Jimmy. This is the third of six Bond theme songs in this countdown, which means three more to go. Thoughts, memories? Enjoy!
