MARKS BEST MOVIE SONGS EVER (1955-99) COUNTDOWN ... NO. 31 DONT YOU (FORGET ABOUT ME)--SIMPLE MINDS (#1, 1985, The Breakfast Club) The song that was turned down by THREE different acts, then reluctantly recorded by a Scottish band that had never had a Top 40 hit, became one of the most popular songs of the 1980s, hitting the Top 40 in March 1985, then soaring to No. 1 for the week of May 18, 1985, spending one week at the top. Keith Forsey and Steve Schiff, a guitarist for Nina Hagens band, co-wrote the song for the John Hughes Brat Pack movie The Breakfast Club, and had targeted different people to do the song. The Fixxs lead singer, Cy Curnin, was asked first. He said, No. Then came Roxy Musics suave and debonair leader, Bryan Ferry. He told the pair, No. Then they turned to Billy Idol. Idol, who was hot at the time thanks to his 1984 album Rebel Yell, flat-out told the pair No and that he didnt have the time. So next on the list -- No. 4 in pecking order -- was the Scottish band Simple Minds, who was signed to A&M Records in which the soundtrack was being done. They said yes, but mainly because of the prodding of A&M president Herb Alpert. So the band reluctantly went into a London studio to cut the track, all the while lead singer Jim Kerr not all that jazzed about singing a song about vanity and security, words in songs he and his band werent best known for. But its the song that broke the band in this country and would be their biggest hit ever. The movie, meanwhile, thrived thanks to the hit song. The movie surrounds the lives of five different students (played by Judd Nelson, Emilio Estevez, Molly Ringwald, Anthony Michael Hall and Ally Sheedy) who come from different backgrounds and cliques who are forced to have detention one Saturday morning with vice-principal Richard Dick Vernon (played by the late Paul Gleason) and get to find out a lot about each other, mainly that all five come from families in which their parents are abusive in one way or another. Relationships, even if they do last for that one day, are formed and the students get an appreciation of others around them. Arguably, its the best of the Brat Pack movies ever made by Hughes and Dont You (Forget About Me) is the biggest of all the Brat Pack songs in this countdown. Ironically, Idol would record the song for a Greatest Hits package in 2001 -- 16 years after he turned it down! Thoughts, memories? Enjoy!
