MARKS BEST MOVIE SONGS EVER (1955-99) COUNTDOWN ... NO. 61 STRANGERS IN THE NIGHT–FRANK SINATRA (#1, 1966, A Man Could Get Killed) Ol Blue Eyes scored the only No. 1 solo hit of his rock era career with a song that he became best known for, Strangers In The Night, co-written by Eddie Snyder, Charles Singleton and Bert Kaempfert, the man who scored a No. 1 pop hit in 1961 with Wonderland By Night. The song, though, was also from a movie, one not many people will remember. The movie was called A Man Could Get Killed, which starred Melina Mercouri, Sandra Dee, Tony Franciosa and the late James Garner, who plays William Beddoes, an American banker who arrives in Lisbon, Portugal for his job, but gets mistaken for an agent trying to search out stolen diamonds that led to an agents death as he pursued going after them. A pursuit for the diamonds ends up with all the characters on the ship of the mastermind of the theft, played by Roland Culver. In the end, Beddoes is able to get the diamonds from Culvers Dr. Mathieson and gets everyone off the boat and gets them to British agent Hatton-Jones (played by Robert Coote). He is given a reward for his effort. Strangers In The Night was used as an instrumental and was originally called Beddy Bye by Kaempfert. By request of Roosevelt Music publishing company, Snyder and Singleton were asked to put words to the movie instrumental and came up with Strangers In The Night. Sinatra hit No. 1 with the song on the week ending July 2, 1966, his first No. 1 song in 11 years. Thoughts, memories? Enjoy!
