MARKS BEST MOVIE SONGS EVER (1955-99) COUNTDOWN ... NO. 65 THEME FROM LOVE STORY–FRANCIS LAI (#31, 1971, Love Story) In March 1971, there were not one, not two, but THREE different version of The Theme From Love Story in the Top 40 at the same time. Though the bigger versions of the song were the No. 9 sung version by Andy Williams and Henry Mancinis No. 13 instrumental, the original movie version was done by Francis Lai (born April 26, 1932, in Nice, France). Its his instrumental he does with his orchestra that resonates throughout the movie that stars actors Ryan ONeal and Ali McGraw as young lovers Oliver and Jennifer who meet at Harvard, have a relationship and get married, much to the chagrin of Olivers well-to-do father, who cuts ties with him. Oliver puts himself through law school, while Jennifer does private-school teaching and he eventually graduates and starts a life with her in New York at a law firm. She soon gets sick and Oliver finds out shes terminally ill. They spend the last few months together, but ultimately he turns to his father, lying to him that he got some girl in trouble. Jennifer and her father plan the funeral, and then she tells Oliver to not blame himself for things that happened. She passes and waiting outside the hospital for his grief-stricken son is Olivers father, who apologizes. Oliver looks at him and delivers the classic line, Love means never having to say youre sorry. Lai and Carl Sigman co-wrote the song was part of the Oscar-award winning musical score. Lai has written over 600 different songs in his illustrious career. And as for McGraws role – from 1970-84, the most common name given to girls born in the United States was Jennifer. Go figure! Thoughts, memories? Enjoy!
