MARKS BEST MOVIE SONGS EVER (1955-99) COUNTDOWN ... NO. 67 ST. ELMOS FIRE (MAN IN MOTION)–JOHN PARR (#1, 1985, St. Elmos Fire) The second and last Top 40 hit for Englishman John Parr (born November 18, 1954, in Worksop, England) became his biggest hit ever, getting to No. 1 in September 1985 and spending two weeks at the top. Named for the weather phenomenon started by luminous plasma being created by coronal discharge from a sharp or pointed object in a strong electric field in the atmosphere, St. Elmos Fire starred Brat Pack actors Mare Winningham, Emilio Estevez, Ally Sheedy, Andrew McCarthy, Demi Moore, Judd Nelson and Rob Lowe as college graduates and friends from Georgetown University trying to find themselves in post graduation. Directed and co-written by Joel Schumacher, the movie introduced people to the mid-80s lifestyle of young people or yuppies. As for the song, co-written by Parr and movie musical director and producer David Foster, it was sub-titled Man In Motion in honor of Canadian paraplegic Rick Hansen, who went around the world in his wheelchair from 1985-87 and finishing 34 countries and over 40,000 kilometers later back in Vancouver. The song remains an 80s staple and may have just stayed back in that decade, but in 2012, Parr re-recorded the song as Tim Tebows Fire in honor of the inspiration the Denver Broncos quarterback became to many as he led the Broncos to many come-from-behind victories that year en route to winning the AFC West title and a postseason victory against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Theres still a couple of Brat Pack movie songs remaining in this countdown, by the way. Thoughts, memories? Enjoy!
