MARKS BEST MOVIE SONGS EVER (1955-99) COUNTDOWN ... NO. 99 TOWN WITHOUT PITY–GENE PITNEY (#13, 1962, Town Without Pity) Written by music veterans Dimitri Tiomkin and Ned Washington, Town Without Pity was the breakthrough single for a 22-year-old newcomer named Gene Pitney from Rockville, Conn., peaking at No. 13 in the winter of 1961-62. It was from a movie that starred Kirk Douglas and E.G. Marshall as battling lawyers on a U.S. Army base in Germany fighting over the innocence or guilt of four young men who gang-rape a young German girl played by newcomer Christine Kauffman. The young men, played by Frank Sutton, Richard Jaeckel, Mal Sondock and Robert Blake, are looking at the death penalty, but Douglas does his best to discredit Kauffmans character literally and figuratively. Disillusioned by the fallout after the trial, Douglas leaves the town with the line, it isnt very pretty but what a town without pity can do. Pitney (February 17, 1940-April 5, 2006) had 16 Top 40 hits and four of those went to the Top 10. Pitney was inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame in 2002, four years before his passing while touring in England at the age of 66. Thoughts, memories? Enjoy!
