MARKS BEST SONGS OF 1975 COUNTDOWN ... NO. 236 STRUTTIN–BILLY PRESTON (#22, January) With the follow-up to his No. 1 hit Nothing From Nothing, keyboardist-singer Billy Preston decided to just keep his mouth shut this time around and let his keyboard do the talkin on Struttin, which got to No. 22 in January. Preston (September 2, 1946-June 6, 2006) made a name for himself when he was invited by none other than the Beatles to add his keyboard wizardry on the songs Dont Let Me Down and the No. 1 Get Back. But before THAT, Preston was a childhood prodigy on piano and keyboards for such gospel stars as Mahalia Jackson, James Cleveland and Andre Crouch. And it was in the 1958 movie St. Louis Blues starring singer Nat King Cole that the producers persuaded Preston to play the role of W.C. Handy as an 11-year-old. Preston was 12 at the time. Preston was the first artist in music history to score Top 2 hits with vocal hits (Will It Go Round In Circles and Nothin From Nothin) and instrumentals (Outta-Space hit No. 2 in 1972). This is Prestons only song he recorded in this countdown. We will hear a beautiful classic he wrote for a recently passed, iconic British artist much, much later on. Thoughts, memories? Enjoy!
