MARSHALL MARBLE & GEORGE YOUNG 1950 - Boat Builders Over the Back Fence, Chron.Star & MP Adv. June 16, 1950 .....When Cinderella turned from scullery maid into beauteous belle, she was just a forerunner of the fishing boat that can become a sleek racing hull. .....The chameleon type craft is built in Jackson County, the answer of two ex-service men to the problem of how to make a living back in civilian life. .....They are MARSHALL MARBLE, native of Jackson countian, and GEORGE YOUNG, New Jersey, who roomed together in St. Louis before Marble went into the navy and Young into the infantry. .....They had decided to throw their lots together and after due consideration and discharges from the service they came to Jackson county where Marble owned property near Harleston. .....By setting up a boat works in the lot at the rear of Marbles home they solved their housing and transportation--and incidently, their employment--problems. .....The men worked together on the original design. They have not branched out so far, turning out only the one model. But that keeps the partners and five employees busy completing four or five each week. .....Their dream was to introduce a fishing boat with clean, graceful lines. A boat easy to handle, safe and adaptable. How well they succeeded can only be fully appreciated by examining one of the finished hulls which are now being shipped through a large mail order-retail company (Sears, Roebuck & Co.) to all parts of the South. .....But the little boat didnt stay long in the fishing class. Marble and Young decided to enter one of their products in some of the local races and now the Y and M is famous in this section, winning with its stock motor over professional racers in a number of races. .....We attribute the good showing the boat has made in racing to the ability of the craft to take a sharp turn, Young said. A good gain is realized on each turn. And then the boat is hard to turn over and the driver can afford to take chances. .....O. M. Tilley, nephew of Marshall Marble, is the usual operator of the boat. Like the partners he is a member of the Harleston Sportsmens Club and purse money goes into the club treasury for the eventual building of a house boat for the 10 friends who copose the membership. .....We are interested in showing what can be done with a stock hull and a stock motor in racing, Young explained. many of these competing in races are professionals with souped up motors but when the average man buys a motor he expects it to last for some years and souping them up is most wearing. We use a regular 16 horse power motor. .....The hull is of red oak veneer from Lucedale, ash from the Pascagoula swamp and an outside layer of mahogany. .....They have worked out an efficient assembly line from the time the stips receive their first coat of glue to the final testing in a concreted basin. The boats are then stored at the plant during months when the damand is slack so the first orders of spring can be met without delay. .....Neither of us really knew anything about boat building and I personally, had never been particularly interestin in boating, Young said, but when the time came to choose some kind of business to make our life work we just decided there ought to be a good future to building just such a boat as we have now. .....Slaes about keeping up with production now and the future looks consistently brighter, as the reputation of their boat spreads.
