MARTHA UDOM EMMANUEL: OUR OWN, OUR PRIDE By Aniekeme Finbarr She is elegant, beautiful and amazing. Her humility may not suggest her royal background, nor will her simplicity betray her privileged status but in that ever cheerful frame of hers lies a genteel and infectious woman who has been behind the success story of Mr Udom Emmanuel. Her name is Martha. Like the biblical Martha of Bethany, sister of Lazarus and Mary, Martha Udom Emmanuel is a study in hard work and support. Her uncanny ability to mix her professional career, spiritual life with the demands of the home front is simply amazing. She has showed unusual strength in balancing her acts as a mother and a wife in the last years as she has weathered the storms of time, which she has had her fair share, to be where she is today. Mrs Udom Emmanuel is a mother with a meek, compassionate, and public–spirit. Not at all a surprise to those who are conversant with her world view; one shaped by love, principles, consistency, transparency, commitment, selflessness, and total loyalty. Whenever the story of Udom Emmanuel is fully written, on a every page, the fingers of Martha will be boldly seen in that success story. She has shown zeal and has remained undaunted in her exemplary quest to see the Akwa Ibom woman stand in her rightful place in the scheme of things, bracing the odds of betrayal, marginalisation, envy and hatred that is commonplace to stand shoulder high above every evil imagination to crown the Akwa Ibom woman with honour and dignity. Deaconess Martha Emmanuel transfers her care for her husband and children to the church and society. She encouraged her husband to single handedly build a cathedral for the lord in Surulere. As the Chairperson of the Welfare Ministry of the Qua Iboe Church, Surulere, Lagos, she created a perfect environment to assist the needy members and missionaries. Through her and her ministry, many are assisted through clothing, food items, back to school items and financially. The care was extended to even non-church members. Other members of that ministry like Dcns Mmekan Akpabio, Dcn Udoh Ekwere, Bro Iniobong Uko, Elder Edet Jimmy, etc are alive and can testify to her generous disposition. Mrs Udom Emmanuel is a virtuous woman. A Virtuous Woman serves God with all of her heart, mind, and soul. She seeks His will for her life and follows His ways. A Virtuous Woman respects her husband . She does him good all the days of her life. She is trustworthy and a helpmate. A Virtuous Woman teaches her children the ways of her Father in heaven. She nurtures her children with the love of Christ, disciplines them with care and wisdom, and trains them in the way they should go. A Virtuous Woman cares for her body . She prepares healthy food for her family. A Virtuous Woman serves her husband, her family, her friends, and her neighbors with a gentle and loving spirit. She is charitable. A Virtuous Woman seeks her husband’s approval before making huge purchases and spends money wisely. She is careful to purchase quality items which her family needs. A Virtuous Woman works willingly with her hands. She sings praises to God and does not grumble while completing her tasks. A Virtuous Woman is a homemaker. She creates an inviting atmosphere of warmth and love for her family and guests. She uses hospitality to minister to those around her. A Virtuous Woman uses her time wisely. She works diligently to complete her daily tasks . She does not spend time dwelling on those things that do not please the Lord. A Virtuous Woman is a woman of worth and beauty. She has the inner beauty that only comes from Christ. She uses her creativity and sense of style to create beauty in her life and the lives of her loved ones. I can dare say that Martha Udom Emmanuel fits in perfectly. She is a true daughter of the land and like the average Akwa Ibom lady, a beauty to behold. When you get close to her, you can feel an air of ease and confidence that is most noticeable in her serene blue eyes outlined with a dash of kohl. Her lovely face is complimented by her easy, charming smile. Wondrous oceans of blue gaze out in playful curiousity anytime she smiles. She is an Amazon. It is obvious that Mr Udom Emmanuel will be elected Governor in 2015. It is even more heartwarming that our first lady will be a perfect fit. A true Akwa Ibom woman in totality. She will emulate the examples of Nigerias first lady-Dame Patience Jonathan. Her pet project is the Women for Change Initiative which is making quite some mark. Deaconess Martha Udom Emmanuel will also borrow a leaf from Maryam Babangida especially in caring for the women and youths. Hajia Maryam Babangida, the dark-skinned beautiful wife of Nigerias military president, General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida was the one who took the role of First Ladyship beyond the shadow of the number one man. With a combination of panache, visibility where it mattered and a well-oiled publicity blitzkrieg, Maryam shone like porcelain in the sun. In spite of her aristocratic posturing, she was not blinded to the sufferings of rural women. Thus, she established the Better Life for Rural Women programme which endeared her immensely to the generality of womenfolk across every stratum of the society. The song of her glamour and style, which she brought to bear on the office of the First Lady, has been sung over and over again. Maryams indelible mark on the socio-political space can never be overemphasized. I spare a few lines to celebrate an Akwa Ibom lady who deserves a good mention. It is our prayer out here, that this woman of great history and unprecedented legacy would finish well as she trods along the journey that is ahead of her. She is our own and we are proud of her.
