MARYLAND FRACKING UPDATE: I’ve been in Garrett County in Western Maryland for the past two days meeting with advocates in preparation for today’s fracking commission meeting where we received an update on the final economic impact study and an overview of the new public health study. The economic impact study is woefully inadequate and I joined several Commissioners in voicing strong concerns about the report, including no analysis on the economic impact of any adverse, negative events and no meaningful review of the impact of this work on the region’s top economic driver: tourism. As for the public health study, it was just released today (see link below) and the Department is accepting public comments on the document until Friday, October 3rd. I encourage you to share your thoughts on the official form provided at the bottom of the link. I will be reviewing the public health study for comments at our September meeting where we will get a full briefing about the content of the report. Please, don’t just submit comments that you’re either opposed to or support fracking – we need substantive comments about any questions or concerns with the study and its methodology. Our Commission is wrapping up it’s work in the next couple of months and will be issuing final recommendations. My position at this stage of the review process remains unchanged – the dangers of fracking are too numerous for our state’s environment, public health, and economy to accept moving forward with any drilling in Maryland.
