MASENO UNIVERSITY OFFICE OF THE VICE-CHANCELLOR Private Bag-40105, MASENO Email: [email protected] Tel: +254-57-351099 Website: maseno.ac.ke Date: August 8, 2014 COMMUNICATION TO ALL STUDENTS Greetings to all students wherever you are taking a break from your studies. I wish to congratulate all students for successfully completing the Academic Year 2013/14. Each student has made a personal contribution, even a sacrifice towards the journey of earning a degree of Maseno University which in turn will provide you with gainful employment and a contributing platform to the development of our Nation. As the University prepares for the new Academic Year 2014/15, the Senate has made some adjustments to the year’s academic schedule. In this regard I wish to bring to your attention the following: - The reporting date for First Year students that was earlier scheduled for 29th August 2014 has been pushed to 8th September 2014. This has been occasioned by the delay of Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) in placing the KCSE 2013 graduates into the various Universities and Colleges. The Universities /Colleges are now scheduled to receive the students on 15th August from KUCCPS, three weeks before our set reporting date for them. The arrival of First Year students normally marks the onset of the new Academic Year and 2014/2015 is no exception. - The current First Year students moving to Second Year in 2014/2015 and who have been in session (April – August) will proceed on long holiday and report in January 2015 to begin their first semester and proceed to second semester in May 2015. This will NOT in any way affect their academic programme as they will still complete their second year of studies within the Academic Year as stipulated i.e. August 2015. - The current Second Year students moving to Third Year of studies in the new Academic Year have been on long holiday for one semester (May - August 2014), and they will be reporting back for their first semester in Third Year (September - December 2014). They will then proceed to the second semester in January 2015 and complete their third year of studies in April 2015. Note that it is against the University policy to keep students on long holiday for two consecutive semesters (virtually one academic year), hence the need for them to report back in September 2014. - The two Fourth Year groups (2009 KCSE and 2010 KCSE) will maintain the same schedules as in the past. The 2009 Group will report in September 2014 for their first semester of studies and proceed on long holidays in January to April 2015. They will return for their second semester of studies in May 2015 to join the 2010 Group which will have done their first semester of studies from January to April 2015, for both groups to embark on their second semester of studies. Both groups will therefore complete their fourth years of studies in August 2015. - The stipulated continuing students mentioned above report on Saturday 13th September 2014 and all classes begin on Monday 15th September 2014. This arrangement ensures that each group of students will complete two semesters in one academic year complete with the long vacation without spilling into the next academic year. It is a temporary arrangement as the University clears the double intake groups of KCSE 2009 and KCSE 2010 and puts in place arrangement to revert to its normal semester schedule. Take note that the students in the programmes transferred to Kisumu Campus and Medical students are not affected by this staggered semester arrangement. They will continue to follow their normal semester schedule. Medical students report to Campus on Monday 8th September 2014 and begin classes on Wednesday 10th September 2014 and students in other programmes report to Campus on Saturday 13th September 2014 and begin classes on Monday 15th September 2014. Summary of the Trimester Arrangement for each group for the Academic Year 2014/2015 is as below: TRIMESTERS TARGET GROUP TRIMESTER ONE (SEPT-DEC 2014) First Years will be in their first semester. Third Years will be in their first semester. Fourth Years KCSE 2009 will be in their first semester. TRIMESTER TWO (JANUARY- APRIL 2015) Second Years will be in their first semester. Third Years will be in their second semester. Fourth Years KCSE 2010 will be in their first semester. TRIMESTER THREE (MAY-AUGUST 2015) First Years will be in their second semester. Second Years will be in their second semester. Third Years KCSE 2009 & KCSE 2010 will be in their second semester. Continuing students at the Main Campus are expected to apply for hostel accommodation online through the University website maseno.ac.ke by Friday 5th September 2014 before midnight. The limited accommodation spaces will be allocated through a computerized random balloting process on Monday 8th September, 2014 at 8.00am and a list of successful applicants will be posted on the University website by 3.00pm on the same day. More information on the reporting dates and other semester arrangements are available on Maseno University website maseno.ac.ke and will be in press advertisement (Standard newspaper, Monday 11th August 2014 and Star newspaper, Tuesday 12th August 2014). A peaceful learning environment will ensure that we complete our studies in time and move on with our lives beyond Maseno soonest. I wish you all enjoyable and peaceful holiday and journey mercies back to Maseno on the scheduled dates. Professor Dominic W. Makawiti, EBS, FKNAS, HSC, FAAS Vice-Chancellor
