******MATCH REPORT - Wednesday 1st October 2014******* Heriot Watt Mens 1st vs. Edinburgh University Mens 3rd I have tried to recreate this tennis event to the best of my ability in order to make it an enjoyable experience for the reader. As far as I know, the information regarding the players and results is accurate, but thats only as far as I know... Alas, let us begin this tale epic encounters and classic rivalry between these two Universities with the singles matches: • Singles Match (1) Our Número Uno seed on Wednesday afternoon was the mighty Maurycy Krukowski. He was playing against Edinburghs much feared Anthony Wang, whos elegance and grace on the court seem to somewhat bamboozle his opponents. But as much can be said for Krukowski — his clever tactics, obscure technique and wicked serve puts his opponents in a strange trance, and the match is lost before they know it. The opening set was very well contested indeed; taking the best of an hour. The long, grinding rallys pushed the players to the limit and required the upmost concentration. Maurycy battled and fought bravely, but narrowly lost the 1st set in a tie break. The Edinburgh Uni player seemed to find a little more confidence after winning the set and found a new lease of tennis life, playing with the stylish precision he is known for. He was just too good for our man on the day. Edinburgh University beat Heriot Watt: 7-6, 6-2. • Singles Match (2) El Capitano - David Norris - played at seed Number 2 against Edinburgh Universitys very own Flying Dutchman, Joep Ten Wolde. The Edinburgh Uni player struggled to find his rhythm on the somewhat suspect Heriot Watt Tennis Courts — the fact that the tennis net was tied down with one of Norriss shoe laces probably baffled him further. The HW Captain saw the opportunity to attack and established a healthy 5-2 lead in the opening set. The Dutchman began to find some form at last and fought back to close the gap. All a little too late unfortunately as Heriot Watt sealed the 1st set, 6-4. The second set followed a similar story and Norris pulled away once more after exploiting his opponents weakness. His dangerously low backhand slices forced the tall Dutchman into awkward positions and eventually secured a win for Heriot Watt: 6-4, 6-3. • Singles Match (3) The talented Heriot Watt fresher, Calum Stout, took to the stage at seed Number 3. He faced a tricky task in overcoming Edinburgh Universitys Lethal Lefty - Hamish Law. Calum breezed through the opening set, making light work of his competitor, 6-0. The Edinburgh University man clearly had a little chat with himself, and the dynamic of the match suddenly changed. The second set was fiercely contested with both players feeling the pressure and tension in the long rallies. Stout was resorting to his squash technique...continuously chipping and slicing the ball back into the court to keep the rallies alive. It did not prevail. The Edinburgh player clinched the 2nd set 7-5. The Championship Tiebreak would eventually determine the winner of this match. The shifts in momentum were of epic proportions, but it was Stouts sheer courage and determination that saw him emerge as victor — 6-0, 5-7, 1-0 — an excellent performance by the debutante. • Singles Match (4) The other Heriot Watt fresher, Alexandre Bryson, was also making his debut on the university tennis stage. His opponent was Edinburghs talented and versatile, Rupert McCreery. From the outset, Bryson, struggled to get any real grip on the match, but showed great passion to remain in contention. The Edinburgh player maneuvered the tennis ball with great accuracy, and dismantled our Heriot Watt fresher with relative ease — 6-2, 6-1. • Doubles (1)&(2) Unfortunately the doubles pairings of Norris/ Krukowski and Stout/ Bryson were not able to outplay their Edinburgh rivals on this particular occasion. Perhaps it was the lack experience of playing doubles together, or that some players just werent on their game that lost them the matches... Norris/ Krukowski lost 6-0, 7-6 Stout/ Bryson lost 6-3, 6-1 In any case, the HW boys all showed great commitment throughout the contests and were unlucky not to emerge victorious on the day. Hats off to Edinburgh University Mens 3rd team who were very strong and showed real quality in the players they had. Edinburgh University Mens 3rd Team Won: [8-4] Although it resulted in a loss, it was a promising start to the Heriot Watt 2014/ 2015 tennis campaign — nos ad meliora tendentibus (we strive for better). Peace out, El Capitano.
