MATCH REPORT As many couldn’t be there yesterday, let’s have a match report! The day started ominously with rain clouds everywhere, Michael Fish predicting a hurricane for Nottingham and the Stapleford team arriving at Inholms Gardens for their game against our 2nd XI… Anyway, 9 men, 1 Shelby and Matt Newcombe set off for Regatta Way. A nice new ground, high quality parking facilities with 6 changing rooms all equipped with showering facilities. More on them later. Once 10 had arrived, the toss was made, Geoff said “Batting lads”, the phone rang, Tom Lyas would be late. It would be nice to think that this was the cricketing God’s tampering with the Flintham batting line up. Peatfield and Dobb strode to the middle with an obvious sense of inevitability. Everyone knew what to expect. However this was not to be. Captain and clown got off to a flyer, posting 134 for the first wicket. Peatfield even considering retiring on a mere 37 (after being dropped twice by the wicketkeeper, maybe that put him in a bad mood). Newcombe came in at 3, the crowd moved ever closer to the edge of their seats. The let of young Matthew’s brain cells took over, slogging the bowling to squarish long on (cow corner). Dropped. After much communication with this left and right brain cells Matthew hit another ball in the air to squarish long on (cow corner). This time Gedling’s answer to Bobby Carlton was waiting, comb over ready, hands waiting, catch taken. The good news was that as Newcombe strode off, Tom Lyas strode on. In short, the pavilion needs it’s roof fixing. A typically dominant innings from the fat Jonathon Trott. Taking on the bowling in the style of other South African/ English batsmen. 79no was a superb knock, but obviously one short of the standard 80 set by Dobb. Anyway, in came the debutant Callum Brown, something of a love child between that bloke off the Mighty Boosh and a badger. In terms of his cricket, he bowled very well and batted better than Josh Reynolds (the ginger Flintoff). The innings soon concluded setting Gedling an enormous 265 to win. For me then came the highlight of the day. The tea. Chips, sandwiches including potted meat, salad including Feta cheese, chicken nuggets, doughnuts, everything was catered for, even Vegans! I would personally give the tea a 9.2 out of 10. No samosas. As Flintham rolled out into the field the tea was clearly taking it’s toll on the fielding. Shelby Sutton opened up, line and length, 4, 4, 2, wicket. It was like watching Tom Lyas open the batting. The next over Robin Cook took control. He might not be as quick as Tom Tebbutt but he does leave the run ups in a better state. Working a probing line and length, the ball struck pad, the slips went off, Robin wondered what had happened, the finger went up, Flintham were euphoric! The game soon moved over, Bobby Charlton in bat. Holding a superb piece of Gunn & Moore willow. Soon Robin Cook was off, Newcombe was on. Boom, smash, wallop, no this is not a Batman comic, that is just an over of Matt Newcombe’s bowling. His brain cells looked at each other, shrugged their shoulders and hung their heads. Only one thing for it, get the debutant Badger at one end and Flintham’s House wives favourite 2001-2013 Geoff Peatfield at the other. Badger kept it tight, probing outside off, Geoff kept it equally tight at the other. Soon the breakthrough came, an edge to gully, spinning like mad, Josh Reynolds under it, no doubt, no fear, Bobby Charlton was dismissed. 1 brings 2 brings 8. Wickets fell like girls at Joe Cook’s feet. Badger got his first for Flintham, Peatfield got 5. Two supreme catches to note. Dan Ashmore with one, sprinting in from the boundary, sliding, catching. The second to win the game, ball off the middle of the bat, straight to square leg, Robin Cook snaffled it. This led to an interesting comment by Shelby Sutton, “I wish my dad could catch like that”. Her words not mine. So to the awards: Shot of the day, Tom Lyas onto the roof. Catch of the day, Dan Ashmore. Man of the Match, the stand in captain, Geoff Peatfield. See you at nets on Thursday! 6-8pm
