MATCHDAY 1 RECAP Cannons Survive ‘Revolution’-ary War, Outlast 76 The much anticipated opening fixture of the Fall 2013 term has come and gone, with the Loose Cannons besting long-time rival Revolution 76 by a score of 3 goals to 2. The boys in black never trailed and, although early in the campaign, proved they’ve got what it takes to be a league title contender. Buzzing with excitement, the Cannons kicked off their season to a home crowd of 6, with family, friends, and even some youngsters out in full force to support the team’s ninth season in Casa play. From the start, it was clear that the boys intended to play for possession, with the midfield providing distribution when on the ball and options when off. Netminder Pete O’Driscoll commented, “That was really nice to see, that. Football as it was meant to be played.” It didn’t take long for possession to translate to goals though, as Dan Visconto opened his and the team’s account with a wonder-goal at the 25 minute mark. “That was something the gaffer and I had talked about in training, coming in wide when playing wing-back. I knew the ball would be there, I just had to time my run properly,” said Visconto. That he did, connecting on the volley from a cross served by Andrew Diamond. The team carried their 1-0 lead into the half, feeling confident. The second half proved a bit more of a test, with legs beginning to tire and the mid-day sun beating down on the black shirts. Still, the Cannons pressed forward and on 62 minutes, Diamond set up another to double the score. Team Captain Seamus Scanlan received the pass on the outskirts of the box, took one touch and let his right boot finish the story, tucking the ball into the left side of the goal. The opposition took away the clean sheet shortly thereafter, which awoke defensive pair Steve Sullivan and Tommy Paluszek into action. Making use of the space on the left flank, Paluszek made a near full-field run before sending the ball ahead for Sullivan. In a very tight footrace, Sullivan poked the ball beyond the keeper’s grasp to put the score at 3 goals to 1. While the final score ended up 3-2, the Cannons always looked like winning on the day. “I’m really pleased with the lads’ performance,” remarked Scanlan. “We’ve returned a core group of players from seasons past, and bolstered the squad with a few new acquisitions as well.” Indeed, activity in the transfer market has seen the additions of Chris Drissel and Jason Huff, with both players debuting on Saturday and making an immediate impact. “I was impressed with the new signings and [am] excited to see them progress as the season continues,” added Scanlan. A source close to the team has let slip that another deal is close, with an English international set to put pen-to-paper before the window closes. The Cannons play next this upcoming Saturday, 14 September, against the Philadelphia Falcons. Kickoff is slated for 10:15AM, with pre-game coverage beginning at 9:30. Misfires: Defender Mike Devero was fined 2 weeks wages for leaving the match at halftime to play in an American football game; team representatives were unavailable for comment. Direct Hits: Defender Tim Scanlan made his return to the pitch, becoming the oldest player to wear a Cannons shirt in the team’s brief but illustrious history.
