MAWLID AN-NABIYYI: some evidences and approval of its Permissibility, acceptability and recommendation from scholars of four (4) mazhabs and salafiyya……… (1) This is a rejoinder to write-ups on Facebook pages or statuses, shared write-ups, likes and comments against Mawlid an-nabiyyi. I don’t easily engage myself in augments or debates of any form, be it politics, science and technology, culture, religion etc. This has been evidenced by my silence or refusal to comment on any of the posts against Mawlid an-nabiyyi since beginning of month of Rabiu awwal even though I do see them on Facebook on daily basis; I always assumed that it is just a normal way of refuting what has been accepted and by consensus recommended by majority of scholars from 4 mazhabs and also the salafiya scholars, that its bidaa (innovation) bla…bla. But it has reached climax today when one of my Facebook friend (name withheld) posted that it is even HARAM to celebrate Mawlid an-nabiyyi. I immediately comment “Do you know the gravity of declaring something haram? Thats adopting the status of Allah (SWT)………..” He has edited and HARAM was removed. I said to myself, if these guys are not ashamed of displaying their ignorance, then I should derive joy in bringing forth evidences and approval of its Permissibility, acceptability and recommendation from scholars of four (4) mazhabs and salafiyya. Giving evidences and proves for Permissibility, acceptability and recommendation of celebration of Mawlid is like watering a plant in a water logged soil, but for the sake of information and knowledge, one will be tempted to bring them forth. I will want the reader to compare and contrast the credentials and scholarships of these scholars whose approvals we brought forward and the social media hype scholars that are against it. For the direct evidences from Quran and Sunnah, that will be for another discussion. What we have now is the opinions of scholars even though they derived it from Quran and Sunnah. I will start with some evidences that the Mawlid is acceptable according to the scholars of the Salafi School, the school followed by those who are opposed to the Mawlid. Such fatawa (religious legal rulings) were made by the pioneer scholars of the Salafi School and they must be studied by all those who claim to follow that school: 1.Ibn Taymiyyas Opinion on the Celebration of Mawlid: This is Ibn Taymiyyas opinion about Mawlid from the Collected Fatwas, Majma` Fatawa Ibn Taymiyya, Vol. 23, p. 163 and his Iqtida al-sirat al-mustaqim, p. 294-295, Section entitled: The innovated festivities of time and place (ma uhditha min al-a`yad al-zamaniyya wa al-makaniyya): And similarly what some people innovate by analogy with the Christians who celebrate the birth of Jesus or out of love for the Prophet and to exalt him, and Allah may reward them for this love and effort, not on the fact that it is an innovation... To celebrate and to honor the birth of the Prophet and to take it as an honored season, as some of the people are doing, is good and in it there is a great reward, because of their good intentions in honoring the Prophet 2.Ibn Kathir Praises the Night of Mawlid Imam Ibn Hajar al-`Asqalani, in his book al-Durar al-kamina fi `ayn al-Miat al-thamina, mentions that Ibn Kathir, a muhaddith from among the followers of Ibn Taymiyya, in the last days of his life wrote a book entitled Mawlid Rasul Allah which was spread far and wide. That book mentioned the permissibility and recommendability of celebrating the Mawlid. Ibn Kathirs book was edited and published in 1961. In it he says, p. 19: The Night of the Prophets birth is a magnificient, noble, blessed and holy night, a night of bliss for the believers, pure, radiant with lights, and of immeasurable price 3. Ibn Qayyims Opinion on Recitation of the Prophets (s) Birthday Ibn Qayyim al Jawziyyah, the best and most renowned student of Ibn Taymiyya, writes: Listening to a good voice celebrating the birthday of the Prophet or celebrating any of the holy days in our history gives peace to the heart, and gives the listener light from the Prophet to his heart, and he will drink more from the Muhammadan spring (`ayn al-Muhammadiyya). Madariji as-salikin, p. 498. 4.Nasir al-Din al-Dimasqhi Proves the Acceptability of Mawlid Shaykh Nasir al-Din al-Dimashqi (777-842), the hafiz of Syria, was a supporter of Ibn Taymiyya. He wrote not one, but several books on the praiseworthiness of Mawlid, among them Jami‘ al-athar fi mawlid al-nabi al-mukhtar (The Compendium of Reports Concerning the Birth of the Chosen Prophet), al-Lafz al-ra’iq fi mawlid khayr al-khala’iq (The Shining Expressions for the Birth of the Best of Creation) and Mawrid al-sadi bi mawlid al-nabi al-hadi (The Continuous Spring: the Birth of the Guiding Prophet)
