MAY PAGASA PA PARA SA MGA DOMESTIC WORKERS, SANA NGA MATULOY. Extension of deadline urged RIYADH: ALI BLUWI Monday 10 June 2013 Last Update 10 June 2013 1:53 am An economist has stressed that the measures currently being undertaken to legalize workers in the job market are necessary. Ahmed Abdulrrahman Al-Jubair said the procedure is clear but the deadline is not sufficient to legalize more than two million foreign workers, some of whom are undocumented and in some cases, without residency permits. “The extension of the deadline beyond Eid would be a humanitarian gesture,” Al-Jubair said. He hoped that the Ministries of Labor and Interior will take into consideration the status of domestic workers, especially as demand for domestic help will increase before the holy month of Ramadan. Sources at the Ministry of Labor, however, said there will be no extension, adding that the three-month grace period is sufficient for legalization. However, some sources have said that domestic workers may be granted additional time during Ramadan to rectify their work status. Nearly 500,000 expats have so far legalized their work status since the Kingdom announced its amnesty for illegal workers either through sponsorship transfer to companies where they currently work or to new employers, a Labor Ministry official said.
