MAYPORT NAAS, 1943. In this photo, the area showing anti-aircraft gun sites was off limits during the war. In fact, the road running along the beach to Mayport was gated and off limits about where the roads meet at the bottom of this photo.. After the war, we kids played in the tunnels connecting the sites. The guns were gone, but concrete pads made it easy to tell where they had been. Artillery outfits trained there all during the war but we never heard any live fire.
